The Vanishing Point

The Vanishing Point

FINALLY! Something to post. Sorry for the delay it’s been a slow arty-news week in Spokane (probably due to snow.) Likewise the internet seems to be failing me epically. However I stumbled across Michael Cook’s site The Vanishing Point and was really captivated. Some really unique and interesting photography of an often un-photographed part of the world. Storm Drains, Utility Tunnels, and other unique industrial locals, his photography seems to give the locations some real ethereal beauty. Give it a good look over HERE.

Flight404’s Solar

My friend Todd sent me this link, and it blew me away. Check it out. Motion rendered to music this well is awe inspiring. Flight404 has a bunch more cool videos as well on vimeo page. Want to try it yourself, check out Processing 1.0.

Where’s Your Art Spokane?

January 28, 2008

Subpar wants to know, we want to attend your gallery openings. We want to see your paintings, we want to get involved, but we can’t unless you let us know.

We know your reading us, we see you lurking, don’t try to hide it, we can only listen to NPR so many hours out of the day. We can only read that creepy spokanearts.org page, the one with the big-screamy-mouth, yeah we can only read that so many times a day.

Help us, help you.

Little late on our tradition here, and by late i mean really late. For that I apologize. So this week we’re going to cap the FoCLF by posting one on Monday and one on Friday. A WINNER IS YOU! This weeks selection brings with it the creepy, which why it was picked I mean after all, who wouldn’t want a free:

Free Medical Exam & Surgical Tables

Free on Craigslist Friday - 1-28-08

Yes folks, free old medical tables. Opening up a doctors office? Reduce some of that expensive overhead, or… indulge your inner Robert Lee Yates, for FREE. What could be better? Maybe replace that love seat in your living room with something a little more… interesting? Its your call. But the inherite creepiness cannot be denied.

Russian Matchbox

Found this great flickr pool the other day and thought I’d share. I am a big fan of Mid Centruy Modern design, in particular Russian Propaganda from WW2 and beyond, and this collection really excited me. It’s exactly that amd more… mid century modern stickers, labels and stamps from the 1950s – 1970s. Some really interesting and amazing things CHECK IT OUT.

Vintage Condom Packaging

January 21, 2008

Devil Skin Condoms
Found this today on Aleksey Belyalov’s blog via Under Consideration’s Quipsologies who I guess got it from NOTCOT (how’s that for some refrences) anyway, figured I’d share. What is it? It’ vintage paper-based condom packaging from the 1930′s and 40′s. Some real gems in here. My fav is the featured above, DEVIL SKIN. I can only imagine the subtle paper envelope hiding a rubber of purely evil design. See more HERE.

21st Century Fox

January 20, 2008

Fox Theater Spokane, WA
Spokane’s PBS affiliate, KSPS, is currently showing a documentary about the rehabilitation of Spokane’s Fox Theater. Equally as impressive as the Davenport Hotel and the Bing Crosby Theater, the Fox has been remade from a 1930s movie house into a state-of-the-art concert and performance art facility. As an added bonus KSPS is showing the documentary in HD for those with the proper setup. Be sure and check the KSPS website for the next available showing (or watch online).

In case you are new to the subpar experience, we have a weekly ritual here, you see Spokane has it’s very own Craigslist and like most Craigslists it is chock full of amazing and odd things. Once a week on Friday we peruse the FREE section for the oddest giveaway we can find and pass the… er… savings onto you!

There’s very little in the science behind the selection, we do seek out free items with pictures if only to aid in your experience, and thats about it. It’s a whim thing. Okay enough chatter lets get on with this weeks winner.

Today’s choice is: Free Styrofoam

Free Styrofoam

It was a tossup this week. We had some interesting things, a machine called a Mangler, a coffee table with a wobbly leg, but what got us was the Free Styrofoam, and according to the post, it’s styrofoam of “various sizes and pieces” too. It’s a great choice, because someone unpacked some item, and then took a picture of the packing materials and posted it on the Spokane Craigslist. So if you are in need of styrofoam… and you want to drive to Newman Lake, well… there you go.

God’s Eye View

January 18, 2008

God’s Eye View - Cross

Creative Review posted a selection of works of the Sydney-based “creative collective” The Glue Society. Commissioned by Eric Romano of Pulse Art it was created for its Miami Art Fair. I really like all these pieces, very elegant and such a different view of religious imagery than what we normally see. I LOVE the installation. You can check out more of the works HERE.

Asterik Studio of Seattle, my favorite design house in the state, has officially split into two entities. The first, Wonderful Union, carries on the cleaner more modern designs that Asterik was known for. The second, Invisible Creature, delves into the more quirky realm of monsters and other rock band territory. I have several show posters hanging in my house from Asterik and I’m somewhat sad to see them split. But the future is where it’s at so I look forward to some new and exciting work out of these fellows.
